A beer spa is a modern wellness treatment in which you soak in a warm bath enriched with hops extract, brewer's yeast and malt. Beer contains fibre, B vitamins and minerals that benefit muscles, joints and skin – and you don't have to drink it to reap the benefits. In a beer bath, these compounds absorb directly through your pores.
What is a beer spa?
Beer spas are rooted in centuries of brewing tradition. Hops were first recorded as a beer ingredient in 768 AD, and their medicinal properties have been known ever since. The world's first modern beer spa opened in 1997 at the Klosterbrauerei Neuzelle brewery in Germany. The concept spread quickly across Central Europe, and today you'll find dedicated beer spas in the Czech Republic, Germany, Slovakia, Poland and Hungary.
The Czech Republic is widely regarded as the home of the beer spa. The Beer Spa Prague brings the experience into the heart of the capital, with private oak tubs, unlimited tank lager and centuries of local brewing heritage on your doorstep.

Every operator has its own recipe, but the core experience follows a reliable four-step sequence. The bath itself is prepared fresh for each session – the main ingredients are local water, beer, live brewer's yeast and a blend of crushed herbs and hops. Most beer spas run their own microbreweries and add their own production directly to the tub.
The classic beer bath sequence
- The bath (20–30 minutes) – You immerse yourself in a 34–38 °C bath enriched with live brewer's yeast cultures and crushed herb blends. The surface is covered with characteristic white beer foam.
- Unlimited beer – Each tub has its own tap. Pour yourself unfiltered, unpasteurised lager throughout the soak – rich in live yeasts and natural carbonation.
- Rest (20–60 minutes) – Wrapped in a linen sheet and blanket, you rest while the heated body finishes perspiring, muscles unwind and skin absorbs the active compounds.
- Optional treatments – Round off the session with a Finnish sauna, salt cave, classic or Hawaiian massage. A post-bath massage multiplies the effects of the whole procedure.

Hops are not just a flavouring – they are packed with health-promoting compounds. The acids humulone and lupulone inhibit bacterial growth, have anti-inflammatory properties and reduce pain. These compounds are absorbed by the body both through drinking beer and – more efficiently – through the skin during a beer bath.
How a beer bath acts on the body
Warm immersion (34–38 °C) gently raises heart rate and activates circulation throughout the cardiovascular system. Muscles relax, joints warm through, and skin pores open – flushing out impurities.
Hops, malt and brewer's yeast – hop oils open pores and revitalise the body. Yeast, rich in B vitamins and active enzymes, regenerates skin. Beer acts against eczema, acne and cellulite. Live yeast cultures supply vitamins, proteins and carbohydrates – softening, nourishing and calming skin conditions.
Beer consumed during the bath benefits the digestive system. Beer contains more than 30 minerals and trace elements – zinc, iron, copper, magnesium, potassium and phosphorus. Polyphenols and flavonoids in beer have antioxidant properties and protect the organism.

Who should avoid a beer bath
Beer spas are not suitable for people with heart conditions, high blood pressure or varicose veins, or for those who have recently had heart surgery. They are not recommended for children under 12 or pregnant women from the third month onward. If in doubt, consult your doctor before booking.
What to look for when choosing a beer spa
Quality matters. Some venues market a simple hot-water soak with beer-scented cosmetics as a "beer bath." A genuine beer bath should contain mineral water, crushed hops, live brewer's yeast and approximately 8–10 litres of beer per tub. Every beer spa listed on Beer Spa Guide meets these standards.
